Mark (owner/climber) has been climbing in some form or fashion for the last 20 years. He started as a rock climber in Moab, Utah where red sandstone is as plentiful as trees in the PNW. After working as a climbing guide for a few years, he and his girlfriend (now wife) moved to Portland in 2007. The outdoor industry was the next career path for Mark and a new job opportunity working for The North Face prompted a move to California's Bay Area. Unfortunately, the outdoor industry doesn't mean one is working in the outdoors! In his search to get back to climbing as a career, Mark found industrial rope access. In 2012 he completed a weeklong training course and assessment and became a certified Level 1 Rope Access Technician. Over the next couple of years Mark gained work experience and additional certifications to become a Level 3 Rope Access Supervisor and later started working remotely in Alaska.

With the birth of their son, Mark and Briana decided to move back to the PNW and settled in Washougal in 2014. In 2017 they bought 6 acres and started planting trees and building a house. Mark finished the house in April of 2020 and started thinking about not working away from home for half the year. That's when the idea of Confluence Tree Care was born. Through climbing and pruning their own trees, planting an orchard, and reclaiming blackberry thickets with native species, it was an easy jump to the idea of having a tree service business. What better way to combine climbing experience with a love for the outdoors and a growing interest in arboriculture, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture!
